systemic functional linguistics is asystemic theory developed by halliday under the influence of scholars fromdifferent fields, including anthropologist malinowski, psychologist buhler, andlinguist j. r. firth. in the 1970s, halliday proposed three main functions oflanguage: ideational function, interpersonal function, and textual function, which later came to be known as 'metafunctions'. then in 1985, the publication of his book introduction to functional grammar marked the maturity of functional grammar (huang , 2000). in this book, halliday (2000) introducesfunctional theory in general and defines functional grammar as 'a naturalgrammar at which anything can be explained'.
